Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical engineering is the physical construction of machines, engines and structures. In 2018, mechanical engineers earned an average salary of $87,370, more than double the average for all other occupations. Engineering and architectural managers earned an average wage of nearly $141,000 per year at that same time. Most of these well paid positions can accept applicants with a bachelors degree, a lot of senior level roles do require a masters degree however.

Similarly, a masters degree is needed for any advancement to a management position, and ongoing training and education is needed to stay up-to-date with the ever changing computer hardware, materials, technology, government regulations and computer software.

Salary.com states, the yearly wage for a recently graduated structural engineer possessing a bachelors degree is from $41,045 – $62,883. The salary range for an experienced engineer with a masters degree and 5 – 10 years of experience is from $74,600 – $102,063; and the salary range for a structural engineer possessing a masters degree and 10 years experience is from $87,562 – $113,770. To be qualified as a structural engineer, you’re required to have a bachelors degree in structural or civil engineering. Before you complete your degree in engineering, you have to possess good fundamentals in physics as well as specific areas of maths, like trigonometry, calculus and geometry. Mechanical Engineer

Elevators, refrigerators and air-conditioners are created and developed by mechanical engineers. Structures have to be able to withstand the conditions that are they subject to.   1. I’m not an expert in this, which is why I find it interesting that structural engineering creates structure that can withhold pressures and stresses. Well, it’s a great thing that you were able to clarify here that a structural engineer will be responsible for computing the grade and load requirements. If I had a company, I’ll probably work with a consultant that may inspect the building for any possible errors.

  2. Hi Rachel, structural engineers are definitely essential when any work related to buildings is being done. It is always a good idea to have a structural engineering consultant to sign off on any work, just to be sure!

  3. I want to have a building made, but I’m not sure how to ensure that it lasts a long time. It makes sense that I would want to get a structural engineer to help me out with this! I can see how they would be able to ensure that the building is made in a way to keep it from falling over easily.

I didn’t previously know that those two were different, and I like that you said that mechanical engineers have hands-on experience in design and manufacturing. I think it’s important for companies to consult mechanical engineers for different projects since they have the skills necessary to build strong and innovative designs to suit their needs.
