Defining Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical engineering has a wide scope and covers many topics. Many aspects of engineering itself are covered, and its practice is vital for creating devices and structures in our modern world.
How Mechanical Engineering Developed through the Ages
If you consider several historical sources, you will find evidence of mechanical engineering in the steam engine's invention of old Greece, to the water clock invented in ancient China. This study was not only shaped by the industrial revolution, but many occurrences before the industrial revolution, like developments in ancient times, were all responsible for the development of this wide subject, which has the potential for so many applications.
If you consider the evolution, there were many breakthroughs during the period. As a vast amount of mechanical devices and structures are covered under its subject, it is difficult to know the extent of its influence on the mechanical objects available today. Kinematics and mechanics are the two important physical fields covered by mechanical engineering, amongst many others.
Although, physics taught in schools, is helpful for understanding this body of knowledge, the knowledge and skills required for understanding its subject matter, can be quite easily be picked up by anybody.
The Engine
The device of an engine forms the most prominent portion in mechanical engineering, and it produces kinetic power by using heat energy. For instance, steam engine is the ideal example of this device, being used as an engine during the developing stages of our modern world. The steam engine not only changed our concepts about mechanics and kinematics, but also helped the society in producing various objects due to its development.
The principles of the steam engine were soon recognized to be applicable in moving vehicles, and transportation became better, by way of new forms of water transport and locomotives.
The development of the steam engine has resulted in the development of many other kinds of engines. The most important engines, which are used today, run on fuels like diesel and petroleum, for generating the required heat for powering the engine. An obvious example would be the engine used for powering motor vehicles.
Helping the Development of Society
Obviously, this subject has not stopped developing with the production of engines. One should keep in mind the broad nature of this subject. Although, engines had a prominent role in the development of this body of knowledge, there are many others aspects of this subject, which helps us understand the behavior of devices and structures of today's world.
The evolution in modern mechanical engineering has spawned the use of practices like kinematics, robotics, and thermodynamics in our modern society.
The Robot and Mechanical Engineering
In the sector of modern technology, robotics occupies quite a large field. Most people take robotics to be the application of principles of mechanical engineering in humanoid or animal-like robots. However, what most people fail to realize, is that robotics also extends its practical applications to the production process and various machineries used in businesses. A very important role is played by robotics, to keep the productions lines of manufacturing and construction running in an efficient manner.
Firstly for building a robot, one has to know how the various moving parts can come together, fitting perfectly, and about the circuitry that computes everything. This circuitry or the robot's brain is backed by electronic engineering that is quite different from this subject. But, during the process of putting all the physical moving parts together to form a single device, a huge role is played by mechanical engineering to ensure a smooth operation. Therefore, the basic application of the robot is under the sway of principles of this important body of knowledge.
Mechanical Engineering in the Time to Come
In every society that has been studied in history, mechanical engineering has played a vital role. It has not only ensured the success of various engines and robot produced today, but has also dictated the way, how the future is going to be, to a certain degree.
Nanotechnology is an exciting inclusion in this field, which is developing fast. This technology is going to play a vital role in developing the electronic and physical world. Nanotechnology has a lot of potential in fueling various developments of applications in future, and it will help this subject to prosper and grow in a futuristic world.
The great importance of mechanical engineering is easily seen from its different applications, and society would never be in the position that it is today without it.
